The Lost Art of Homemaking

Ahhh, the 1950’s. A simpler time. Sock hop music, poodle skirts, smaller houses, single car households, single income households, wives at home in their aprons.  Its so easy to romanticize that time period. It sounds perfect to so many of us, myself included. 

That picture perfect lifestyle was not for everyone though. My moms side of the family did not live in a quaint neighborhood. She grew up in the mountains. They didn’t have a lot of money.  Even though my grandmas 1950’s life didn’t involve drive in movie dates with her husband, or grabbing a burger and shake at the local sock hop, her ideals were the same. Family first, cooking from scratch, a simple life. 

I don’t know when this changed. But I’m sorry it did.  As a whole, our focus is now on money. Who has the nicest house? Who drives the nicest car? Who has the best toys?  Babies are being raised by their daycare providers. Teenagers are being left to make decisions without a parents guidance. 

My passion is at home. I love caring for my husband, our children and our home.  My priority has always been my family. I never wanted the career or a fast paced lifestyle. I love to spend time in my home decorating, cooking, playing games with my family. Even just bumming around watching movies. 

If you spend time making dinner for your family, think about them while you’re cooking. When you make dinner with a happy heart you are cooking with love.  It’s the same with cleaning or decorating, washing dishes or doing laundry.  If you make it your passion, choose to be joyful while you’re doing it, you’re blessing your family and your home.  

Don’t think of grocery shopping as just another chore on the list.  Do the shopping with love in your heart and you’re being intentional about making healthy choices and choosing items to please yourself and your family. 

This is the lost art of homemaking. Blessing your family and your home. It’s so easy to get caught up in day to day life- Work and keeping up with the Jones’s.  Let’s get back to the simpler life. Back to the good ol’ days. Let’s be intentional with our days and bless our home and families. Let’s revive the lost art of homemaking. ❤️

Life Happens

Tomorrow is October. October?!? I cannot believe September flew by like this. I mean, I can hardly register what happened over the course of this month. It was full of stress for my daughter, calls and emails to her school to try to make things right, lots of trip to the orthodontist, a hospital stay, doctors appointments and tons and tons of driving.  What a crazy month, I am glad it’s over and I hope October is a little better to us. 

In every dark time there is a little light. Sometimes it’s hard to see. Our light was our family growing closer. We’ve always been tight knit, but this helped us to see the big picture..helped to realize not to sweat the small stuff. 

I am thankful to God for getting us through the hard times. I am thankful for my family pulling together and taking care of each other. I am thankful for my husband, my children and that we are all here today.  


I got this image from the Bible App. I try to spend some time reading the Bible everyday, but life happens. It needs to be a priority, and I’m working on it.  But for now, I lean a lot on the Verse of the Day.  I’ve found it is spot on for whatever I’m going through.  This image was today’s verse and I am definitely finding comfort in it.

Weekend Breakfast: Pancakes & Bacon

Mmmmmm….bacon. 


Is there a better Saturday morning smell than bacon cooking?


If there is…I don’t know to know about it.  The funny thing is, I don’t even really like bacon all that much. But every once in a while, it really hits the spot. And it does smell amazing! 

Both of my girls had friends sleep over last night.  So we had 3 extra mouths to feed this morning. I cooked bacon for 2 hours. I’m not even kidding. I have this awesome electric griddle, and without that, it probably would have taken a lot longer to cook 3 packages of bacon. 

After the bacon I whipped up a triple batch of homemade pancakes. I’m not going to bother with a recipe, it’s just a standard pancake recipe. The only thing I do a little different is buttermilk. I like to substitute buttermilk for the regular milk. And if I don’t have it (which I never do) I add about a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to the measuring cup before the milk. I do this as I’m starting my recipe so it has time to set. Adding the vinegar or lemon juice will spoil the milk, and give you the same basic consistency as buttermilk. 


I cooked these guys on the electric griddle, as well. I tend to forget that I even have it. But when I pull it out I like to use it a lot. 


Soooo many pancakes. When I make these in the weekend I like to double or triple my recipe. Then we have leftovers for a quick weekday breakfast. Pop one in the toaster and you’re good!


Pancakes with bacon is a simple, sometimes time consuming, but very delicious and popular breakfast- at least for my family. 

I wanted to share this last picture with you. My 12 year old daughter took it as I was driving her, my daughter M and a couple of their friends out to a high school football game. 

Isn’t it gorgeous?? The highschool is out in the middle of nowhere, there is literally nothing but desert in either side of us in the picture. I just love it here. Every day I am still amazed at the beauty of the desert.

Weekend Breakfast: Egg in a Hole

Poof! And just like that, the weekend is almost over.  I just love making big family breakfasts on the weekends.  Everyone sleeps in, rolls downstairs still in their pj’s and we have a nice big breakfast. Lazy mornings are the best. 

This weekend was a little different. Saturday, I had a girls trip to a small town outside of Tucson. The tiny town of Sonoita is filled with wineries.  So I went with my sister, niece and a close friend and we spend the day tasting wine. So fun!!  But, we left at 9:30 in the morning, so I didn’t get to make our usual breakfast. 

My goodies from our day of wine tasting-


I had big plans this morning. Hubby has been so sweet to me lately, I wanted to make his favorite breakfast. He got up before me to get a brisket in his smoker for dinner. I woke up a little while later, planning to have 1 cup of coffee, and then get started on biscuits and sausage gravy….but Hubby got called in to work. (I hate when he gets called away for work, but I also hate to complain about overtime.)

I didn’t want to have Hubby leave for work without something in his belly.  I decided to make Egg in a Hole. It’s quick, simple and he could eat it in the car if necessary.  I don’t have recipe typed up for it- it’s super easy to make. 

You will need-

First, you’ll need to heat a skillet to medium and lightly coat with cooking spray.  Butter both sides of a slice of bread and place in the heated skillet. Take a medium sized biscuit cutter and cut a hole in the center of the bread. 

Crack an egg and add to the hole in the bread. I like to use only egg whites. 

Sprinkle with salt and pepper. 

When the center of the egg is starting to set, flip the bread and egg to brown the other side. 

I served Hubbys Egg in a Hole with a fruit cup and oj. I just had the oj.

There it is- my quick but satisfying weekend breakfast.  I love traditions and this is definitely one that my family enjoys. I especially love that traditions can be tweaked to adjust to life.

Good -bye Sweet Summertime

I cannot believe summer vacation is over. How did this happen?  It was just yesterday we were taking end of school pictures and looking forward to the lazy days of summer…right?

Apparently not. We’ve completed school shopping and I’m a lot poorer than I was a month ago. The backpacks are packed and ready for tomorrow. These girls are excited and not excited at the same time. One is starting 10th grade and my youngest us starting 7th. 7th grade?!?  My baby is in middle school. She’s pretty nervous about a new school, new kids, and everything that goes along with the first day jitters. She knows of a few friends in her classes, but most of her close friends will be indifferent classes. Poor thing. 

So what has everyone been up to this summer?  My girls took a vacation with my mom, and that was literally the only thing we had going on. I thought about taking them on a roadtrip, but that didn’t work out. Most of my summer was spent shuttling them back and forth to friends houses. A little boring for me, but I know this season of life won’t last forever and I will miss it. 

So being home bound let hubby and I work on some projects around the house. He had a vegetable garden, I did a lot of shopping for native plants for our backyard. I’m really enjoying getting to know this beautiful area and see the amazing things it can produce.  

Our backyard is up against a wash (like a natural roadway for rainwater- rain falls so hard and fast here, and the ground is so hard it won’t absorb, the rain has to have some place to go), so we get to see quite a few desert animals. We’ve had coyotes,javalina and quail. And a few unidentified creatures. 😳 Hubby and I enjoy looking to see what will pass by our backyard. 

That was basically our summer. The kids go back tomorrow. Today is family dinner at our house. Sharknado 5 is on today so we’re going to watch a few silly shark movies and have everyone over for pulled pork sandwiches, with a pork shoulder Hubby smoked the other night. We tried it yesterday and it was DELICIOUS!  I can’t wait. 

I guess that’s all for today. Hopefully I’ll get back into the swing of things and post a little more often.  I’m pretty sure I said that same thing at the end of the school year. Haha

My Morning Routine

I’ve always been fascinated by people who schedule their daily lives. Why follow a schedule when you’re at home?  Isn’t the point of being at home to relax, be leisurely and do what you want?  Why would anyone want to make a set time for housework? 

And then one day I realized- I was following a routine without ever intending it. It just makes life easier. I make sure my daily chores and housework are done before any fun.  Don’t get me wrong, my entire day is not scheduled.  But it’s definitely helpful to get certain things done in the morning, before starting my day. And certain things done in the evening, before going to bed.

  • 4:45-5am – wake up, pack hubbys lunch, pour our coffee, sit down to watch the news, kiss hubby good bye
  • 5:30- shower & get dressed
  • 5:45/6-more coffee, check emails & social media, read Bible
  • 6:15/6:30 wake up youngest for school, start laundry, unload dishwasher, make breakfast, pack lunches
  • 7- youngest daughter out the door for the bus, wake up older daughter for school, flip laundry
  • 7:15- fix my hair, make up, wipe down bathrooms, start more laundry, walk the dog, start on daily chores

I would love to hear about your daily routines. Morning, nightly, whole day- anything really. 

11 Pounds Down! 

Eleven pounds might not sound like a lot, but it sure makes me happy. I have struggled with my weight for years! I would exercise for months and not drop a pound. I would watch my diet, but cave after a week. This time, I’ve stuck with it, and it working.  

So I’ve been following a 1200 calorie diet. I’m not being super strict with it.  I’m using the My Fitness Pal app. I’m pretty happy with it. It does what I need it to. It tracks my steps, but a lot of times I’m not carrying my phone around with me. If I go out walking, I’ll make sure I put it in my back pocket. 

Breakfast is usually just a yogurt. I found these 100 calorie Chobani Greek yogurts and they are delicious!!  They work well for me because I have a HUGE sweet tooth. 

It tastes like a cookie!!


Lunch is usually a lift salad with oil and vinegar, sometimes I’m even skipping the dressing. I only do that if I have a lot of toppings for my salad- grillled chicken, light cheese, veggies- and let me tell you, roasted chickpeas on a salad are amazing!!!  They are a perfect substitute for croutons. 

Today, I wasn’t home for lunch, so I made a to go lunch.  One huge apple, a serving of Triscuits, and a 100 calorie Special K treat. 

Then at dinner time I just make whatever. Tonight we’re having grilled chicken and veggies. If it’s a crazy night and we’re going to order pizza- I might have one piece, and then a big salad. 

So that’s it. I haven’t even been keeping up with working out.  I will commit to walking in the evenings for at least 15 min. Hopefully that will boost my weight loss.
